Hagen Becomes 1st Charger to Win Utah Football Gatorade Player of Year

Life’s a sport. Drink it up.

Cole Hagen, the Deseret News’ 2019 Most Valuable Player for the 6A division, is doing just that as he caps his prep career on the gridiron. The quarterback who led the Corner Canyon High to the 6A state trophy has been named the 2019-2020 Gatorade Utah Football Player of the Year, the first Charger to ever win the 35th annual coveted honor. The award distinguishes the senior as one of Utah’s best high school football players and qualifies him for consideration for national Player of the Year designation.  The national honor will be announced later this month.

Gatorade reserves the award for players who demonstrate outstanding athletic excellence, high standards of academic achievement, and exemplary character on and off the field.  “The Gatorade Player of the Year award doesn’t happen unless I am surrounded by great coaches and teammates,” Hagen told the Salt Lake Tribune.  “Our team as a whole made it possible for me to win this award.”

Corner Canyon’s Van Fillinger Picked for All-American Bowl

It was a fitting end to a standout season for the Chargers. Days after helping his team achieve victory at Utah’s 6A Football Championships, Corner Canyon High’s strong-side defensive end Van Fillinger was awarded his All-American Bowl jersey before an auditorium of cheering peers.

To be chosen for the All-American Bowl is a rare distinction reserved for the nation’s top players. Fillinger, ranked Utah’s No. 2 football recruit, is among three players chosen from the Beehive State to play for the western team.

“It’s a pretty big step,” Fillinger told KSLTV, an affiliate of NBC, which will air the All-American Bowl on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2020 at noon. “There’s really nothing more that I could ask for from my high school experience. I was lucky enough to take part in two state championships and now I’m getting to play in the All-American Bowl. It’s been a dream ever since I was little. It’s really a blessing.”
